The primary objectives were to develop a system that can sanitize and store reusable medical equipment, particularly the Hart Mask previously designed. The solutions involved creating a cabinet that uses UV light for effective sterilization, ensuring the equipment is safe for reuse. The design aimed to be low maintenance, cost-effective, and easy to integrate into the daily routines of healthcare workers. This approach not only reduces medical waste but also lowers the overall cost of sanitization for hospitals.

The Sanix Cabinet project was initiated to improve the efficiency and work environment for healthcare professionals, particularly nurses. The goal was to create a system that integrates sanitization methods to reduce hospital waste and enhance the reuse of personal protective equipment (PPE). This project emerged in response to the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for better PPE management and sanitization in medical settings.

The development process involved co-design elements, gathering insights from healthcare professionals like Arielle, a 23-year-old nurse, to understand their daily challenges and needs. Through interviews and iterative testing, the design was refined to ensure it met the practical requirements of hospital environments. The focus was on creating a user-friendly, efficient, and reliable solution that enhances the overall work experience for medical staff.

Market research revealed that one-time use medical equipment significantly contributes to hospital waste, accounting for 4.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The research highlighted the potential for UV sterilization as an economical and effective method for sanitizing reusable medical equipment. The design criteria included ensuring the cabinet is safe to use, sustainable, and easy to integrate into existing hospital workflows. The outcome is a modular, low-maintenance solution that reduces waste, cuts costs, and provides clear instructions for users, ultimately reinventing the habits of PPE usage and sanitization in the medical field.
